Why You Should Take Beach Maternity Photos

Okay, beach maternity photos… They’re something special. I don’t know if it’s the sunlight that frames you like it was meant for you or the soft breeze that makes it feel like magic, but I just know that it always does.

The beach is the perfect maternity shoot location for parents-to-be who love being outdoors, have that effortless, carefree feel, and are more focused on the excitement of this time than they are on a performance. It’s truly a moment that feels like it’s just the two of you, where time is standing still!

I love beaches for any kind of photoshoot. You can see more beach photography from this engagement shoot and this family photoshoot for even more inspiration.

Where to Take Beach Maternity Photos in Boston

As a Boston maternity photographer, I know that this is a place that’s filled with gorgeous beaches. If you’re planning your beach maternity photoshoot, here are a few of my faves!:

  • Castle Rock – forever one of my all-time photoshoot locations because of its beautiful rock formations and ocean views.

  • Nickerson Beach – this one is a park, so it has some variety (which is always great for any sort of photoshoot!)

  • Savin Hill and Malibu Beach – for that classic, coastal feel if you want wide-open space and ocean breezes.

If you’re looking for something different, I’m always here as your Boston maternity photographer to help you narrow down the location that tells your family's story.

When to Take Beach Maternity Photos

I always suggest taking your maternity photos between 30 and 34 weeks of pregnancy, but depending on when that falls, the weather could be a little tricky to work with. The best months for a beach maternity photoshoot are between April and October, but we can always get together for a winter beach session, if that’s when you need it!

As far as time of day, sunrise and sunset are my favorite times for any kind of photos on the beach. Sunrise will bring fewer people so that we have the whole beach to ourselves, and sunset will bring golden light that feels like a movie. I like to base which one we choose on the vibes of the two of you, if you’re bringing any kiddos with you, and what works best for this time of year!

What to Wear for a Beach Maternity Photoshoot

Pregnancy and beaches both call for flowy, light fabrics. I always love something airy in a neutral color that complements the beach, and for you and your partner to coordinate, not match! Here are a few links if you need some exact ideas for what to wear for beach maternity photos:

Quick Tips for Planning Your Beach Maternity Photoshoot

If you’re looking for a quick guide on planning to make sure you have everything squared away, I’ve got you covered!

  • I always suggest bringing a towel or blanket to sit on for some cuddly pics in the sand!

  • Keep snacks and some water on hand, because we don’t want you hungry or thirsty. You’ll feel way more comfortable when you’re full and hydrated.

  • Be sure to prep for the beach: sunscreen, a hairstyle that the wind won’t mess up too badly, and hydration.
