Fall Weddings at Farm Road Estate in West Dover, VT: Planning + Inspiration Guide

I’ll start by stating the obvious: fall weddings are absolutely beautiful. If you're dreaming about a fall wedding in Vermont, Farm Road Estate is one of those places that makes it really easy to picture your whole wedding weekend. Think colorful fall trees, cozy spaces to spend time with your favorite people, and a setting where you can actually slow down and enjoy getting married.

I've photographed weddings at Farm Road Estate, and one of my favorite things about this venue is how much opportunity there is to make the day feel personal. So if it's on your venue list, I'm sharing what I love about photographing weddings here, along with the things I'd want you to know before planning your own fall wedding.

If you’re the type of human who gets excited when you step outside to temperatures in the 50s and seeing the first leaf on the ground in September feels like a national holiday, this blog post is for your wedding planning needs!

Why I LOVE Farm Road Estate for Fall Weddings

First things first… I love Farm Road Estate in Dover, Vermont, SO much.

You get a historic estate feel.

You get waterfront views.

You get versatility.

And in autumn… You get incredible fall views. Ones that make you and your guests say, “Wow… I’ve actually never seen leaves this vivid.”

Beyond the looks, Farm Road Estate is one of those venues where you can really settle into the day. Nothing ever feels rushed or stressful; you just get to relax, be taken care of, and genuinely enjoy time spent with your people.

When I document weddings here, it’s always a gallery full of editorial shots by the pond, you laughing with your best friends, and sweet candids of you two dancing under string lights. And I’m 100% obsessed, every single time. There’s nothing I love more than seeing you live in the moment!

If you’re reading that and vigorously nodding your head because you’re already like, “Yep, that’s exactly what I want,” you’re my exact kinda person. And I already know that a fall Farm Road Estate wedding fits you so well if you:

  • Care about feeling over performance

  • Love all things cozy + warm

A Quick Overview of Farm Road Estate

Farm Road Estate, though? It has so many things to love.

You’re completely apart from everyone in the world, right in Dover, VT, with your favorite people (up to 300) here. You get exclusive use of the venue all weekend including the on-site cottages and inns, which is something I love for my couples because you get to really soak in the feeling. Wedding weekends will always get a yes from me!

And as if this venue couldn’t get any more perfect, you have all-inclusive package options that really make sense for wedding planning. You can add things like farm-to-table catering, rentals, and on-site staff to your day that make planning feel easy and not like you want to rip your hair out.

One thing I love about Farm Road Estate is that you aren't limited to one setup for your entire wedding day. You can exchange vows near the ponds or in the Enchanted Forest, then move into the Great Room or event tent for your reception, depending on your guest count and the experience you're planning. And if you're inviting people to spend the weekend with you, the on-site accommodations make it possible to turn your wedding into more than one afternoon together. Which, personally, I LOVE. More time with your favorite people is always a win in my book.

How to Plan a Fall Wedding That Feels Like You at Farm Road Estate

If you’ve already booked your fall date at Farm Road Estate, or you’re heavily considering it, these are a few things that will be extremelyyy helpful in placing all the pieces of your day together. Because as a type A Vermont wedding photographer… This is where I thrive.

Fall Wedding Color Palettes That Work at Farm Road Estate

This is your permission: fall weddings don’t have to be all red, orange, and yellow. At Farm Road Estate, I really love seeing palettes like:

  • Olive green + yellow

  • Burgundy + chartreuse

  • Plum + raspberry

  • Monochrome brown

And as long as it feels like you, you can do whatever colors you’d like. There are no rules here!

A Sample Timeline for a Fall Wedding Here

Fall in Vermont (pre-Daylight Savings) brings cool weather, a pretty low chance of rain, and sunsets between 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm. And those things are all extremely important when it comes to making your day-of wedding timeline.

Here’s a base timeline that I’ve seen people build on to fit their day that works really well for fall weddings here, but PLEASE don’t send this directly to your planner and make it the end-all, be-all.

9:00 am: Wake up on-site + start getting ready

1:00 pm: First look, private vows, and couple portraits

2:00 pm: Wedding party photos

3:00 pm: Relax before the ceremony

4:00 pm: Get married!

4:30 pm: Cocktail hour + family photos

5:30 pm: Reception entrance + special dances

6:00 pm: Have someone make you two a plate, then sneak away while dinner starts if you want sunset photos

6:15 pm: Join dinner + toasts

7:30 pm: Dance party!

One thing I always pay close attention to when planning fall wedding timelines in Vermont is sunset. The light changes pretty quickly as we move from September into October and November, so the timeline I'd recommend for an early September wedding is going to look different from one in late October. And trust me, we don't want to realize we missed the best light after the sun has already gone down!

If you're getting married later in October or November, I'd likely move portraits earlier or adjust your ceremony timing so we're not trying to squeeze all your outdoor photos into the last few minutes of daylight. This is something I help my couples plan ahead of time, so you don't have to think about it on the actual day.

The Rain Plan for Fall Weddings at Farm Road Estate

While we’re on the topic of weather, let’s talk rain plans, because it’s super important to me when I’m recommending a venue.

Again, October and November in Dover have a pretty low chance of rain, but Vermont weather could decide to pull a curveball on us. If that’s the case, Farm Road Estate has us (literally) covered with indoor options for your ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception!

I always, always urge you to make a backup plan a few months before the wedding in case of rain. That doesn’t mean refreshing all the weather apps daily 3 months out from your big day, but it could save you a whole lot of stress if you wake up to a cloudy morning-of. Look through my entire rainy wedding day guide here for everything you need to know about making a plan B that you actually like.

Fall Wedding Dresses Perfect for a Farm Road Estate Wedding

One thing I always remind my fall wedding couples is to think about how they'll feel outside in their wedding outfits. Vermont can get chilly, especially later in the evening, so having a cute jacket, wrap, or second pair of shoes can make such a big difference. And if we're heading into the forest or walking near the pond for portraits, you'll definitely want shoes that can handle a little uneven ground!

What Fall Wedding Photos Look Like at Farm Road Estate

One thing I love about Farm Road Estate is having a few different portrait locations without needing to make your wedding day feel like one long photoshoot.

We can get editorial couples’ portraits in the forest.

We can get cinematic photos of you two running around the pond.

We can get golden sunset photos of you two dancing around the courtyard.

We can plan a little time near the pond or in the forest, but I'm also thinking about how long it'll take to get there, what the light is doing, and when we need to get you back to your people.

Because as much as I love your couples portraits, I also want you actually enjoying the cocktail hour you spent months planning!

Because, also, I’m there to step back when I need to and watch the real moments unfold all around me. And when we’re in a wedding venue like Farm Road Estate, where everyone is fully relaxed and settled… That’s when I get the good, real emotions. And that’s what really makes your gallery special.

If you're already imagining your own wedding here, I love that for you!! And if you're looking for a photographer who will help you plan the photo timeline, keep things feeling relaxed, and make sure you actually get to enjoy your day, you can take a peek at what working with me looks like.
