The (Actually Easy) Step-by-Step Guide to Planning Your Maternity Photoshoot
There are so many things I love about maternity photoshoots, but being able to capture that calm feeling before your world is about to change (in the best way) is one that really stands out. As a Boston maternity photographer who is deeply invested in my couples and their lives⦠Getting to be there for these moments always melts my heart a little.
This guide is for the moms-to-be who want to take maternity photos, but who donβt want to stress out over planning (because you definitely have enough on your plate right now). Iβm covering everything here: how to prepare for a maternity photoshoot, what your maternity photo session actually feels like, and small things that you probably didnβt think about until now.
First Things First: Why Do a Maternity Photoshoot?
I know that preparing for a baby can feel chaotic at times, but a maternity photoshoot is a really great way to slow down a little bit and soak up those last few moments before your days are filled with snuggly naps, diaper changes, and adorable little baby noises.
Plus, maternity photos are a great way to honor you, as a mom, and the way you were growing life. These moments are so special, and they deserve to be captured forever!
I love maternity photos becauseβ¦
Your child can look back on them one day and know that that was them
They can make for incredibly sentimental photos to hang around your home
They capture the way your family is right now and freeze those moments in time forever
The Step-by-Step Guide to Planning Your Maternity Photoshoot
When to Take Maternity Photos
If youβre here, you probably have the same question that basically all of my couples do: βWhen should I take maternity photos?β
The answer can vary depending on your pregnancy, but I typically give my mommas a time frame of 28-34 weeks. This is that sweet spot where your bump is adorable, you can still move without wanting to cry (because trust me, it happens), and youβre at less of a risk of going into labor yet.
I always suggest scheduling your maternity photos as far in advance as possible, to make sure that Iβm available and have you on the schedule!
Where to Take Your Maternity Photos in Boston
The location that you choose for your Boston maternity photoshoot totally depends on the vibe youβre going for. You can do beach maternity photos, city maternity photos, or indoor maternity photos based on how youβre feeling, what season it is, and what style you want your photos to be!
A few trusty spots that will always be gorgeous are:
Castle Rock, for maternity photos that feel cinematic and carefree
Boston Public Garden, which is a beautiful spot in the spring with blooming flowers and waterfront views
A studio, which we can search for here
Right at home, and hereβs exactly why I love those sessions
The best news? You donβt have to find a space alone. As your Boston maternity photographer, Iβm here for you through every step of the process, whether that means hand-picking the perfect location that fits exactly what you want, or helping you up after taking a breather during your maternity photoshoot.
Taking Maternity Photos With an Older Kid
Sometimes, people want to include the whole family, and those sessions are always so incredibly special. Getting big brother or sister in on the pictures gives us some of the sweetest images.
If the thought of including the whole family makes you shudder a little, thoughβ¦ Donβt worry. I have some tips to make it all feel smooth and easy:
Make sure everyone is well-fed and well-rested. Full bellies and good sleep make the best formula for a happy kid!
Be in a place where everyone feels comfortable to eliminate nerves, like your home or a park where they can run around wide-open.
Take a deep breath, and let kids be kids. Remember that the best photos come from unplanned moments where everyone is being themselves!
Including Pets in Your Maternity Photoshoot
While weβre on the topic of including your family members, donβt forget your pups! Having them in for some shots can be an adorable way to get the whole family. If you bring your pets, I recommend bringing someone who wonβt be in photos with you who can be your designated dog person.
What to Wear for Maternity Photos
This is a section youβll love if youβre the kind of pregnant where everything feels uncomfortable and restrictive, because Iβm allll about comfort here.
The best photos come from being able to feel like you can breathe and move easily, so Iβll forever suggest soft, flowy fabrics like chiffon, organza, or linen.
As far as colors, neutrals are always the way to go! If youβre coordinating with your family, you can do earth tones, creams and browns, or even some shades of blue for some really beautiful photographs.
Here are a few maternity photoshoot outfits that I love to recommend to my mommas:
How to Prepare for a Maternity Photoshoot
I know that every pregnancy is different, so preparation will 100% depend on how youβre feeling throughout your third trimester. For some people, beauty and hair appointments will be on the list, and for some people, just getting out of bed that day is a win. This is a safe space for both of those kinds of people.
A few tips that I always give, no matter what, are to hydrate, eat, and lay out everything youβll want to wear and bring a few days in advance. This makes everything run so much smoother and makes the day feel so much better!
How Long Does a Maternity Photoshoot Last?
Most maternity photoshoots last around an hour. Itβll depend on your location, how many rest breaks you need (because weβre definitely moving at your pace), and how many people you have with you, but we typically aim for around that timeframe.
What is a Maternity Photoshoot Like?
Once youβre actually at the session with me, everything runs really naturally. After we connect and get to know each other, I spend the rest of my time guiding you into poses that feel natural for you, fixing your hair or dress when needed, hyping you up, and, of course, laughing with you!
We take everything slowly, because thereβs no pressure here. Itβs so easy, and a time to just celebrate this milestone!
Whatβs the Best Time of Day to Take Maternity Photos?
Mornings usually work best for maternity photoshoots, because the lighting is soft and everyone is typically rested and full from breakfast. And thatβs a pretty foolproof formula, if you ask me.
Maternity Photo Ideas From a Boston Maternity Photographer
If you need some inspiration for your maternity photos, take this list as ideas that we can make your own:
Holiday-themed maternity photos β if your pregnancy timeline falls around a holiday like Christmas, we can totally use the aesthetic of the season to make your photoshoot a little extra unique.
Include props β add in some things that can elevate your photos! Think onesies, baby shoes, or even ultrasound pictures.
Head to a spot thatβs important to you guys β if thereβs a certain beach or park that you know youβll take your baby to often throughout their childhood, that can be a really special maternity photoshoot location to tell your story in.
Maternity Photoshoot Pose Ideas for Couples
Beyond the bump shot, there are some really adorable maternity poses that I love to get every time of you two as a couple. I always get you sitting in front of your partner, some (gentle) movement shots, solo shots of just the momma, and of course, some of your partner kissing the bump!
Each session I do has its own personality. As a Boston maternity photographer, Iβm always hearing what you need, whether itβs strict posing, candid shots, or pretending like Iβm not even here. So, donβt fret too much about how to pose for maternity photos.
